By the end of 2017, about 500 billion dollars had been officially invested overseas. If we count direct and offshore investments, 60% of these funds went to the United States.

With the “discovery” of investment in EB-5 projects, the number of visas has been increasing exponentially. Two years ago, 27 EB-5 visas were issued, rising to 282 last year and up from 500 this year. This will put Brazil close to reaching the country’s 7.2% limit, bringing the undesirable delay of a few more years to be contemplated with the conditional Green Card.

In a recent round of lectures in Brazil, another bad surprise: of 80 people expected to attend the event of how to invest in the US and live legally in the country, more than 260 entrepreneurs and investors appeared at the headquarters of the Federation of Industries of the Amazon, showing well the insecurity that spreads throughout the country. No longer just personal insecurity, but also institutional and with regard to the possibility of economic recovery of the country, regardless of who wins the elections.

But then the main problems of our culture begin. Even assuming that if you win a conservative and liberal candidate, the dollar at the most lowers about 5% of the current level, you risk risking the dollar to rise more than 20% or 30% to have a “chance” to make a good deal!!! They also believe, for the most part, that the internationalization or globalization of their company is a measure of despair, of flight, and not part of a serious and sober strategic planning that any investor must do, both in business and family terms, with deadlines and well-structured actions.

On the other hand, it comes to the United States a good part with the impression of arriving at a paradise, as if the fantasy of Disney extended to the country as a whole, the Americans and the Brazilians that have arrived here before. They advise someone who speaks Portuguese and who met in the supermarket, in the park, with a friend who played ball or a loving neighbor. The consequences we see every day in the newspapers, of unsuccessful ventures, huge losses by mistakes, incompetence or even dishonesty of “counselors.”

If we are going to have our expenses and investments in dollars, it is not possible to speculate the eventual conversion rate of the day. If we are going to invest, we have to plan in the short, medium and long-term. We have to know if we will have the resources to reach the point of balance, and even the ideal point of the company, and if we do not have the resources we need, already planning how to get them. Hard has been learning these cowboys!
